ITV Listings

Good News :D

Our teachers have recently told us that we are allowed to look at the family channels of both ITV and channel 5.

While Channel 5s tv listings didn't necessarily interest me on either of their family channels as I have decided that I am looking more towards creating something fictional (with a factual piece at the back of my head) I had a glimpse at ITV's channels listing and I have found that they are more suiting to something I may wanna do.

Firstly, I looked at the main channel. ITV (1).

On their commissioning page ITV was described as

the home of high quality, popular television from the biggest entertainment events, to original drama, soaps, sport, factual series and independent news, both national, and regional.
Looking through their TV listings although I tried to show a range of shows on their channel, please note that all the fiction programmes on this list are basically the only ones they show on their channel. And to be honest, while over the years they have gradually gotten rid of the majority of their fiction programmes, I am not surprised that the director of programming would have kept 'Coronation Street' and 'Emmerdale', they are the channels biggest money makers.

Coronation Street on its own attracts an average of 9.4 million viewers for each of its five episodes per week. While Emmerdale almost reaches it with a whopping 7 million views for each of it's six episodes per week.

Apart from these they have also kept Midsomer Murders, I'm not entirely sure why, although I do not it is very much loved by many and I guess they may keep it because it's nostalgic value for many as well as  being one of the only shows which they can state gives their programme listing some "diversity".

ITV (1) are mainly interested in factual shows, often in the forms of talk shows, where their purpose is to be informative like 'Good Morning Britian' or to be a secret guilty pleasure of pure quality trash like 'The Jeremy Kyle Show' - was that too real, it felt to real - either way they try to incorporate an aspect of reality on their daily television listings.

After looking closely at the listings for this show I have thought that if I were to create a programme for this channel it would most likely be another soap opera with Coronation Street used as a stimulus text (because it is the more popular soap) and I would possibly include a murder as the disruption of my show and the sequences point of  significant conflict would be the characters blaming the murder on different people, only to then get an unexpected revelation at the end of who killed the victim.

Or I was considering possibly creating a talk show however I am not entirely sure how I would fit the brief tasks of one of the narrative/structures being to:

  • A key turning point
  • A point of significant conflict
  • A resolution
If I think of any other ideas I will let you guys know, and if you have any suggestions for me feel free to let me know in the comments below.

Bye guys :)
