ITV and Channel 5 Show listings

Before choosing which channel to showcase my programme on, i decided to research some of the programmes already shown on the individual channels ITV and Channel 5.

Firstly lets look into the institutional factors of each.

ITV

On their website they explain that ITV is an integrated producer broadcaster and the largest commercial television network in the UK. It is the home of popular television from the biggest entertainment events, to original drama, major sport, landmark factual series and independent news, but while it does this they show these range of shows on their six different channels being: ITV, ITVBe, ITV2, ITV3 and ITV4 and CITV.

ITV is also the largest and most successful commercial production company in the UK and their

investment in programming is primarily funded by television advertising revenue.

Channel 5
Channel has achieved... less but it is still one of the UK’s third largest commercial channel and reaches 44m viewers every month with a spirited mix of high quality and emotive content. They also have other family channels being: 5 Star, 5 USA, 5 Spike and My5.

To showcase some of the programmes that have been listed on ITV and Channel 5 I have created a table with five fiction and factual programmes each and i tried to incorporate some of their more popular shows as well as still get a fairly good range of genres, however through this table you will be able to see a clear pattern of the preferred types of shows for each channel.

What I got from each channel
ITV seems to try to appeal to a more mature audience and the received the information on their target audience from the website and i have observed that the majority of their shows are made to appeal to women.
They also often enjoy showcasing panel shows and regularly stick to showing factual shows rather that fiction as they only showcase two fictional shows. However, these shows are very widely known and watched and probably bring in the most viewers to their channel which is why they show back to back episodes of them.

Channel 5 very much enjoys a good documentary or two and they generally have quite a wide range of different types which they try to make so they appeal to both genders. For there fictional side they also only have few soap opera but i noticed that there's were Australian which was quite confusing but also made them seem more likeable and less cringe-worthy unlike the typical UK town ones.
They also a few crime dramas but again, not too many.
I don't think i have decided which to choose from yet but if it turns out that we can look at the family channels as well of each of the programmes then i may be more likely to choose ITV.

That's all for now folks :)
